Safety Practices and Policies
Campers must wear PFD’s equipped with whistles, close-toed shoes, and are encouraged to wear hats and sunglasses.
Campers must demonstrate the ability to swim 25 yards after which they tread water for at least one minute.
Campers must demonstrate the ability to recover a capsized boat and must remain with the boat until the recovery is successful.
All on-the-water activities will be monitored by knowledgeable personnel in a power boat equipped with a VHF radio to communicate with shore personnel and an air horn to signal campers under sail. Two horn blasts mean return to the pier immediately.
No sailing is permitted if lightning strikes are within 10 miles of the sailing venue.
One member of the camp instructional staff will be solely and exclusively responsible for monitoring the weather conditions, including lightning strikes, during all on-the -water activities.
In event of potentially severe weather conditions or lightning strikes within 10 miles, the weather monitor will communicate with monitoring boat personnel to signal the campers to return to the pier immediately.
In event of either a weather or lightning incident, a period of at least 30 minutes will be required before campers are allowed to return to any on-the -water activity.
All instructional sailboats will be equipped with bow lines that will allow them to be towed if required.
Persistent adverse weather or lightning strikes may require cancellation of the day’s activities.
If a cancellation is required, parents will be contacted. Camp instructional personnel will remain onsite until all campers are picked up.
